Post-It Notes, Crispy Fries + The Curious Craftsmen
Shir Lee + Kai’s Love Story
Half their lives now they have been friends. Such a long time ago a shy boy, met a young girl, with an incredibly infectious smile. It was not love at first sight, over ten years passed before many walls came down drawing them closer. She discovered the once quiet Kai was actually really witty, once warmed up he actually talked a lot! A goofball by nature, he was so much fun to be around. Shir Lee’s cheerful character, had been rubbing off on him. Just as a good stew slowly and steadily gets better when allowed the time, so did their friendship. It all happened so gradually they didn’t even notice it simmering to a boil. They began eagerly awaiting weekend tennis, long phone calls and sharing meals together until one weekend when they could not see each other. WHAM! A realization. Suddenly, something had changed, there was a spark. As if magnetic poles shifted they were irresistibly drawn together. Toto, were no longer in Kansas. They were over the rainbow headed into new unexplored relationship territory. He truly lit up when he saw her and she became deeply worried if she saw him ever unhappy, his well-being had become her utmost priority. Both now craved constant connection.
Before you knew it, he was eating the soggy fries and leaving all the crispy ones for her. She was noticing his focus, kindness and willingness to help others. He flipped all her switches. She saw wisdom and intelligence, however, he was far too humble to ever accept the compliment. Laughter unifies unlike anything else, so not surprisingly, her hilarious feet dances and his ability to re-write nursery rhymes sent them in fits of laughter. So hard they laughed that tears of happiness shook down sore rosy cheeks. Hearts now on their sleeves, the world could see that they had eventually fallen in love. Stars shone a little brighter it seemed. All of life’s sweet little gestures filled their daily lives, they choose to create for themselves a home to share. Harmony filled the every inch of their tiny space. He would make her breakfast and she would always deliver on a delicious dinner. Kai’s post-it notes dotted the fridge with reminders to “eat lunch” at work, messages of “I miss you” were sent when they were apart. With every full spin of the clock as the sun began rising Shir Lee would adventure across their bed sheet ocean, in search of him, looking for a snuggle. In his arms quickly became her happy place. Nothing was more attractive to him than to see her deliriously happy.
Together they embarked on a journey with a little business called “The Curious Craftsmen”. Kai drew inspiration from his experience as an architect as they discovered he had a talent for designing and making bespoke furniture. An unstoppable duo was formed when his skills were combined with her ability to negotiate sweet deals and show their creations. They cradled their new passion with such pleasure that they could build something together with equal enthusiasm. Success came when their little online shop was nominated for the Etsy Design awards, magazines started to publish their products, she was so extremely proud of him and what they had achieved. Both were juggling full-time work and labouring over launching a business with sweat, and most importantly belief in themselves. Giving it their best shot to achieve their goals and fulfill their dreams. At home one evening she sat recalling the time when Kai, with deep sincerity, spoke of his hopes for their future. He was determined to work hard to make a better life for them both, this had touched and surprised her that he had truly placed importance on what lay ahead. Something they did not discuss much however, was marriage, so the when it came to the proposal Shir Lee was gobsmacked.
One beautiful day following a nice dinner out after work, on the way home, he casually suggested they look for a spot to see the sunset. He knew she loved watching the day fade so would be eager, and not suspect a thing. After much scouting for a nice spot, they decided to head home, it just wasn’t meant to be that day. Undeterred he suggested they rest on their very own balcony. He felt a kind of peace wash over him and knew it was the right time as the teeny, tiny bit of golden glow set in the distance. Kai deeply wanted her to understand how much she meant to him, so became serious. Listening to his every word she became overwhelmed with emotion. She assumed he wanted to show his appreciation for her help with The Curious Craftsmen. It was now quite dark, in the still of twilight with the element of surprise he lowered to one knee. She thought he was tying his shoelace. Slowly he pulled a box from his pocket and asked her “Will you marry me?” Tears streamed down her cheeks. In a split second, she felt every emotion imaginable. Touched, happy, excited, shocked…everything all rolled into one! Reeling from the shock, she said “yes”. She had no idea what was in the box, but at that moment, the overriding emotion was gratitude. All that mattered was that the love of her life wanted her, by his side, forever. She could not agree more. That he proposed in their home, a place they had both put so much love into, made it all the more sweeter. Sharing the same ideals family, tradition and life would make life so much easier.
Never doing things by halves they began a succession of mini breaks. Weekends were spent scouting the countryside for ideal locations and the ultimate venue to be the backdrop for their wedding story. Keenly they decided on the splendour of Werribee Park Mansion, surrounded by wide open surrounds. Quickly they built the tribe that would be their supporting act. So much gusto went into planning, life became even busier as together they designed and prepared the little such as preparing invites and decorative elements. Finally the day drew nearer. April sixteenth two thousand and sixteen turned out to be a cool autumn day with a blankets of cloud filling the sky. Lack of sunshine would not, however, stop the nature from glowing, as leaves turning shades crimson, gold and burnt orange hung delicately onto their branches. Nor did it dampen spirits, separately they playfully prepared, excitedly awaiting the moment they would catch a glimpse of each other. Smiles stretched a mile wide on both their faces as she walked down the aisle towards him. Their ceremony spoke of love for each other and care for dear friends and family gathered, sharing in their celebration. Once signed and sealed they frolicked in the gardens creating static memories, beaming with joy as guests enjoyed lawn games by the stately footprint of the mansion.
Navy hues of night swallowed the last light as the crowd gathered in the warmth. Bellies were filled with delicious fare as drinks flowed. Walls of sound waved through the reception hall as delightful encouragement from adoring fans toasted “yum seng!” to the newly married couple, a Malaysian Chinese tradition. On the dancefloor music swelled as spotlights kissed their silhouettes. Here in this moment, no one else existed in that room but each other. She fell into his kind eyes, he pulled her close, drinking in her soft, warm skin with his tender hands. Never will he forget the subtle scent of her, lingering now in memory. Being together made everything heightened, meals tasted better, commuting to work was more bearable, even household chores were more fun! Whatever the future held they took comfort in one thing. Occupying the space by their side, the one, the person on this earth who could seem to heal all wounds and always captivate their imagination.
