The Stages of Life
Candice + Caleb’s Love Story
Drama Class, Year 12, set the scene where a young easy going boy met an animated young girl with the most incredible smile. Effortlessly they chatted through classroom rehearsals and card game matches during free periods. Their friendship blossomed.
He began to realize every time he looked upon her adorable face and great set of pins that it was more than friendship he saw in her. Graduation arrived, knowing he was cutting it fine he made it his mission to break the dating ice as they floated in the bay at Docklands. He began asking anyone that would listen where he could find her. A beacon of hope in a sparkly blue dress she mesmerized him, all the while remaining oblivious to his newfound admiration.
At his 18th birthday party Candice spotted two gorgeous girls that she had never seen before, the thought occurred to her “He’ll never notice me with these two hanging around”. Blind sided by green eyed monster she did not give any more thought as to why she felt that way. Internally she sulked for the remainder of the party until discovering that the competition was in fact his cousins! Reassurance washed over her, a revelation popped into her head that would change it all, “That’s a weird way to feel about someone who is just a friend…*penny drops*..”
Falling in love happened slowly as they learnt more about what made each other tick. Her love grew beyond his sweet eyes and soft lips when looking all dapper in a suit. Watching him do the dishes or hearing him laugh uncontrollably made her heart flutter. A simple foot massage would knock her right out. Despite saying ridiculous things when he is tired, she wanted her whistling counterpart to continue to open her eyes.
They set about on an adventure to Mauritius where they would put themselves out of their comfort zones. Generally calm under pressure, Caleb was challenged by trying to communicate in a foreign country where the agenda consisted of snorkelling, parasailing and walking with tigers. He soon knew that he could trust her, that she would lead him through life with zest and compassion.
In the winter of 2014 Caleb asked Candice to set aside a whole day in her busy schedule for them to spend together. Fleetingly she thought, “Ha-ha, maybe he’ll propose that day! ” followed by feeling completely silly she dismissed the idea promptly. His plans included showing her the wonders of the Yarra Valley such as lunch at a vineyard café, a chocolate factory & cheese-making ranch. On the way back, winding their way through the slippery hills, they headed towards the look out over Silvan Dam.
Arriving they stopped at the lookout point and saw precisely, nothing. The view was the vague outline of two large trees in the distance, through the thick blanket of fog that lay rested on the water. In the car they sat, silent. He has always found her persistence admirable, taking a leaf out of her book, undeterred he carried on with his plans and asked her “Will you marry me?”
Overwhelmed her cheeks became stained with tears. She asked if he was sure. He reassured her he was serious and knew exactly what he was doing she excitedly said “yes”. A sense of calm and freeing fearlessness came over them, the time was exactly right. They had enjoyed an incredible day of holding hands, full of discovery and delight, now marking the start of the rest of their lives.
Plans began for a spring wedding the following year; they found they could tackle any decision they faced together through compromise and consideration for those they loved. Putting directors caps on they planned for the performance of a lifetime. Wanting their wedding to be a day for all to enjoy they would create an environment where surprise, humour and fun would rule. Only positive drama would share the spotlight. October 15th 2015 would be a day to remember.
On a warm blustery Thursday, surrounded by swaying green grass of the Dandenong Ranges they faced away from each other nervously anticipating seeing each other for the first time on the day they would wed. Neither was disappointed as they beamed at each other across the field. Close friends nearby, fun ensued as they soaked in the daylight hours before they would stand facing each other once more, at the altar where they would finally seal it with a kiss.
Planned to perfection they enjoyed every second of the day. Sweeping across the dance floor covered in fog, like the day he proposed, was a highlight amongst others such as the dessert buffet, spectacular and humorous serenade by his closest pals and heartfelt well wishes of those who spoke to the gathered crowd. Every moment filled their hearts with joy. As husband and wife they exited through an avenue of adoring fans waving sparklers guiding them to the waiting car, ready to whisk them away into the city under the stillness of a cloud covered night sky. That night exhausted they held each other in a way that said ‘I never want to let you go’, they closed their eyes and welcomed whatever the sunrise would bring.
